Historically, katana (刀) were one of the traditionally made Japanese swords (日本刀 nihontō)[2][3] that were used by the samurai of ancient and feudal Japan.[4] The katana is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, single-edged blade with a circular or squared guard and long grip to accommodate two hands.


打刀（うちがたな）是日本刀的一種。一般而言，室町時代後所說的「刀」指的通常是打刀。


打刀不同於主要用於馬上作戰的太刀，主要是用於步戰的日本刀。


打刀的佩帶方法一般是刀鋒向上的，用腰帶把刀身夾住的方式，插在腰帶裡。


江戶時代至幕末的武士喜愛用打刀，因為長度適合於徒步戰鬥和室內打鬥。
